Fiscal federalism training provided to newly-elected politicians in Southern Sudan

The Forum of Federations recently delivered presentations on the features of fiscal federalism in different countries to 90 newly-elected members of the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly.

Civil society workshop maps out Ethiopian leadership retreats
Thirty two representatives from a wide range of Ethiopian organizations attended a three-day workshop recently held in Addis Ababa to plan and prepare for a series of federalism leadership retreats in 2010 and 2011.   

Nigeria

Practitioners agree on how to beef up fiscal accountability in Nigeria
The Forum of Federations held a Roundtable on Intergovernmental Fiscal Coordination and Accountability in Abuja on the 19th of June 2010 as part of its project on fiscal responsibility, accountability and transparency in federations, which is being led by Professor Lars Feld of the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

Government of Australia presented with report on international roundtable
The Australian government. has been presented with a comprehensive report on the International Roundtable on Metropolitan Governance held Dec. 14-15, 2009.

Pakistan

Pakistan event focuses on fiscal federalism
More than 50 participants at a recent Forum event debated what will happen to Pakistan’s federal architecture if increased financial powers are granted to Pakistan’s provinces.

Pakistani participants upbeat about future prospects of newly-named region
The Chief Minister of the newly-named Pakistani region of Gilgit-Baltistan recently urged all political parties and people of the new region to join hands as a gesture of resolve to make a success of the new system of governance for Gilgit-Baltistan. 

Stakeholders discuss shift of powers to Pakistan’s provinces
More than 70 people including elected officials, civil servants, academics, journalists and activists from different political parties gathered recently in Peshawar to learn and discuss how major revisions to the country’s constitution will affect Pakistan’s federal system and the lives of its citizens.

Forum forges link with European Union
The Forum recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Committee of the Regions (CoR) of the European Union providing for the two organizations to jointly implement a variety of activities.

Forum co-hosts Belgian capital cities function
The Forum in partnership with the Facultés universitaires Saint-Louis in Brussels, recently held a half-day seminar on the finance and governance of capital cities.

International experts discuss role of political parties
In many federal countries, the proliferation of political parties has made it more difficult to form a government, both on the federal or the provincial and state level. 

Spain

Spain's decentralized health care system: 25 years later
The Forum and three local partners in Spain recently held a one-day seminar titled Decentralization of Health Care in Federations: Recent Trends and Lessons from Spain. 

Some federal countries accommodate regional diversity, seminar finds
Territorial pluralism – a system that allows for regional differences within a country – is the norm in Spain, where, quite naturally, the Catalan and Basque languages are spoken more often in Catalonia and the Basque Country than is Spanish.

Brazilian officials discuss curbing regional inequality
A roundtable on Fiscal Federalism and the Struggle Against Regional Inequality was recently held in Brazil to discuss the role that resource distribution has played in fostering improved federal-state-municipal
relations in Brazil while helping to reduce inequalities in the country.

Expert explains Italy’s long road to federalism
Italy is facing many challenges on its way to becoming increasingly federal, according to Italian federalism expert Vincenzo Antonelli, who spoke at a recent lunchtime seminar at the Forum of Federations’ Ottawa headquarters.

After an injection of nearly US $1 trillion from the European Central Bank, the five European Union (EU) member countries with the highest public debts are still not out of trouble.
