2009-2011 Swiss Internships: The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation has granted the Forum of Federations $154,776 to provide practical experience in federalism for young professionals from developing countries and transitional countries with federal structures, from around the world. Working with the Swiss Institute for Federalism (Fribourg) and the Conference of Cantonal Governments, the program will provide work experience for junior employees in the fields of politics, administration, academia, and media. Chosen from the international students attending the international summer school on federalism in Fribourg, those participating will get an opportunity to take on internships, working in the civil service of participating Swiss cantons. Other important program components include the building of an alumni network and the promotion of relevant follow-up activities in the participants’ home countries. The Forum’s work will commence in 2009 and continue until March 2011.

 

2009-2011 Pakistan-German Foreign Office: The German Foreign Office has granted the Forum $3,579,783 over the years 2009, 2010 and 2011 to facilitate and enhance dialogue between the provinces in Pakistan and the central government, and conflicts among the provinces. With its partner organization, the Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency (PILDAT), the Forum will work to strengthen the capacities of key government institutions of intergovernmental relations to develop and implement policies for successful management and resolutions of centre-province conflicts. 2008-2011 Nepal-SDC: In 2008 the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) granted the Forum $750,000 for a three-year program to help Nepal build its capacity for developing and implementing a federal democratic system. In addition to building the capacity of the Constituent Assembly members to draft a federal constitution, the Forum was mandated to increase understanding of federal systems among political party leaders and the civil society, and to enhance the knowledge and teaching of federalism in Nepal’s educational institutions. The SDC-funded program runs from August 2008 until March 2011. See our Country Page

 

2009-2010 Ethiopia-German Foreign Office: The German Foreign Office has granted the Forum $1,183,000 for the years 2009 and 2010 for it to provide information and training to leaders within Ethiopia’s federal system in conflict management, and in how to go about using federal institutions and channels of communication. Working with the House of Federation, Ethiopia’s second chamber, the Forum will aim to heighten the knowledge and skills of a significant number of leaders in the area of federal governance at national, regional and community levels. The Forum’s work will begin in the fall of 2009 and continue for two years. See our Country Page

 

2008-2010 Sudan-DFAIT: Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade granted the Forum $3,189,609 in 2008 to provide information and training for public authorities and different segments of civil society as well as to Sudan’s civil service on how to handle the finances of their new federal system in both the central and subnational governments. For Sudan’s senior policy makers, the Forum is providing options on how to implement important federal aspects of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the Government of Sudan and South Sudan. The Forum is also working with Sudanese universities to develop a curriculum on federalism. In addition, the Forum is bringing policy makers, academics, civil society members, political party members and journalists together to participate and influence the debates and decisions about how to share power and wealth in Sudan.
