The Forum's Development Assistance program includes training programs, courses, workshops and technical advice in those countries that are in transition to federalism or considering a transition to federalism. In the program, practitioners and experts are provided with tools and opportunities to explore issues related to federalism.
Recent highlights of the the Forum's development assistance work includes:
- In December 2008, forty senior Nepali civil servants spent three days learning about the implications of federalism on their ministries.
Between January and March 2010, a wide range of Sudanese governmental, non-governmental and civil society participants are trained in federalism as a component of sustainable peace.
Upon request of the Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, the Forum commits to Nigeria’s process of constitutional review. Moreover, training as well as dialogue and consultation mechanisms on issues of fiscal federalism are planned in 2009.
In a multi-year program commencing 2009, the Forum works with prominent local NGO PILDAT in Pakistan to act on governmental requests for support in strengthening federalism.
Approximately 20 training-dialogue sessions with political leaders throughout different parts of Ethiopia are planned on how federal institutions can be mobilized to manage conflict beginning April 2009.
Around 70 Iraqi law and political scientist learn about federalism and key principles of federalism to pass on their university students in 2008. More activities are planned in 2009.
The Forum, in coordination with the National Democratic Institute, prepares a program to explore power-sharing arrangements with Sri Lankan government and civil society leaders.
The expected budget for the Forum's development assistance program for the 2009-2010 fiscal year is approximately 4 million dollars.
