Valuing Water for Sustainable Development

Our ability to value and manage water effectively will determine whether we achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Meeting SDGs 6.1 and 6.2 alone will require an estimated USD 114 billion per year in capital expenditure. If we fail to value water effectively, it will be hard to stimulate necessary investments and policy reforms. Yet there are also increasing opportunities for innovation to value water better, enabling more efficient and equitable allocation of scarce resources while ensuring the resilience of watersheds and freshwater ecosystems. These challenges and opportunities have prompted the Valuing Water Initiative of the UN/World Bank High Level Panel on Water, the OECD’s Roundtable on Financing Water and a range of initiatives led by businesses, civil society and governments.
