On May 7th the Forum of Federations hosted David J. Kramer, President of Freedom House. Freedom House is an independent watchdog organization dedicated to the expansion of freedoms around the world. Its work consists of analysis, advocacy and programming to uphold fundamental rights and promote democracy. It monitors the progress of freedoms around the world, with offices in Europe, the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia.
Mr. Kramer delivered the presentation "Crisis in Ukraine: Russian Moves and Western Responses” to Ottawa’s political and diplomatic community, as well as those more generally interested in issues of democratic development and consolidation. In his presentation, Mr. Kramer argued that the recent events in Ukraine represent a setback to the continued integration of the international community.
Mr. Kramer stressed the need to provide support to Ukrainian civic organizations and journalists who are integral to upholding and protecting democratic values. He also emphasized the importance of the upcoming presidential election, stating that it must be conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner so as to give legitimacy to the Ukrainian government.
