(L-R) Rupak Chattopadhyay, President of the Forum of Federations, Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn
Rupak Chattopadhyay, President of the Forum of Federations called on Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn on November 7th, 2012. He was accompanied by Mr Shawn Houlihan, the Forum’s Senior Director for Africa and Mr Maeregu Habtemariam, Senior Program Manager for Ethiopia.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Hailemariam has affirmed that Ethiopia would continue its support to the activities of the Forum of Federations. The Prime Minister noted that as Ethiopia’s federal system was relatively recent, it was keen to use the Forum of Federations as a means to learn best practices from countries which have older well-developed federal systems. The Prime Minister noted that Ethiopia was committed to the federal system that had produced a government of equality and justice for the peoples of Ethiopia. It would also continue to work to share its experiences with neighboring countries in promoting the concept of federalism.
Mr. Chattopadhyay noted that the Forum valued its collaboration with Ethiopia and stressed that Ethiopia’s successful transition to a federal system offered many lessons for other African countries and beyond. Ethiopia hosted the 5th International Conference on Federalism in 2010 under the theme “Equality and Unity in Diversity for Development”. The Forum runs a Federal Governance Leadership Development Program in Ethiopia supported by the German Foreign Ministry.
