Rupak Chattopadhyay meets with Nepal Leaders while on mission.
The Forum has been implementing a 3-year program titled, Federalism in Nepal: Supporting Nepal’s Constitutional Transition,
Rupak Chattopadhyay, President and CEO of the Forum of Federations, visited Nepal from June 5 June 9, 2011 to assess the current state of debate on federalism and discuss Forum’s current programming as well as future programs with stakeholders.
Rupak Chattopadhyay met with top political leaders from major political parties, members of international and donor community, national experts, journalists, and academia. He discussed the challenges facing the development of the country’s new federal system of government, and how the Forum of Federations can assist during the transition.
His high level meetings included a meeting with President of Nepal, Ram Baran Yadav and with Vice President of Unified Communist Party of Nepal Maoist, Dr. Babu Ram Bhattarai. Discussions centered on the experiences of other countries that underwent transformation from a unitary to a federal system of government and the necessary conditions for a successful completion of the constitution-drafting process and its subsequent implementation. The possibility of Nepal becoming a partner country of the Forum was also discussed.
