The Australian government. has been presented with a comprehensive report on the International Roundtable on Metropolitan Governance held Dec. 14-15, 2009.
The event was held on June 1, 2010, hosted by the Major Cities Unit of Infrastructure Australia as part of a joint project with the Forum of Federations and the Australian Centre of Excellence in Local Government.
The report addresses the key themes and critical issues that emerged at the roundtable, such as the challenges of managing metropolitan growth, infrastructure, transport and sustainability.
Secondary problems are also discussed, such as resource capacity, administrative management, local government structures and inter-governmental relations, particularly in the Australian context.
As a follow-up initiative, the University of Technology Sydney Centre for Local Government is launching a Governing Sydney project to explore specific governance and planning challenges for the metropolitan region.
Also flowing from the December 2009 meeting, the Forum is preparing a book of case studies on the subject of metropolitan governance. Authors will meet in Australia to elaborate the content of this book on August 19-21, 2010.
