India and Forum hold roundtables on federalism

The Forum of Federations recently co-organized a regional roundtable on federalism in Guwahati, in the state of Assam. The event, which took place on June 12 and 13, 2007, was co-ordinated by the Forum, the Government of India and India’s Inter-State Council Secretariat.

The event was inaugurated by Mr.Tarun Gogoi, chief minister of the state of Assam, and attended by senior officials from all seven of India’s northeastern states. The Forum was represented by Forum President George Anderson.

The second roundtable, which took place in Nanital in the state of Uttarakhand on June 21 and 22, 2007, was opened by the Chief Minister Major Gen. B C Khanduri (retired).

The roundtables are meant to engage policy-makers on the four themes of the Fourth International Conference on Federalism – namely the management of diversity, fiscal relations, inter-governmental relations and local government. The next roundtables will be held in Kochi, in the state of Kerala on July 26 and 27, and in Salcette, in the state of Goa on July 30 and 31.
