In collaboration with the National Democratic Institute, the Forum organized a workshop for Nigerian governors in Abuja, from 23-27 August 2000. Twenty-six of Nigeria’s governors attended this workshop, which was opened by Atiku Abubakar, the Vice-President of Nigeria. The goal of the workshop was to provide the governors with an opportunity to assess of their achievements and the challenges that they faced during their first year in office. The ultimate aim was to lay the groundwork for a national governors’ association. The participants heard from several ‘expert trainers’: two former provincial premiers (from Canada and South Africa); one former state governor (from the United States); and two current Lieutenant Governors (from the United States and India). Jesse Jackson, President of the Rainbow-PUSH Coalition in the USA, also addressed the event. The conference resulted in the creation of a Nigerian governors’ association with an executive and an operating constitution.
