Sri Lankans examine power-sharing options

The first of the three workshops on Power-sharing Options for Sri Lanka and the Federal Idea was organized by the Forum of Federations in partnership with the Centre for Policy Alternatives of Colombo. More than 50 participants took part in the workshop, which was held from Feb. 15 to 16, 2007, in Kandy.

The group included provincial councillors, members of the Bar, academics, religious leaders, representatives of womene’s organizations and a journalist.

International resource persons for the workshop included: Professor Akhtar Majeed, from the Centre for Federal Studies, Hamdard University, New Delhi; and George Anderson, the president of the Forum of Federations. Local resource persons included: Dr. G.H. Peiris from the University of Peradeniya; Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu, Executive Director of the CPA; and Rohan Edrisinha, Director and Head of the Legal Unit at the CPA. Irina Shmakova and Jean-Philippe Linteau from the Forum of Federations also attended the workshop.
