Members of the two and a half day workshop held in Myanmar, Feb 23-25,2014.
This two and a half day workshop was organized by the Forum in collaboration with Myanmar EGRESS at the capital of Mon State Mawlamyine. Myanmar EGRESS is one of the Forum’s local partners its work focuses on democratic capacity building in Burma.
The resource persons for this Workshop included Dr Sandeep Shastri (Jain University, Bangalore), Dr Francis Loh (Penang University, Malaysia) and Shawn Houlihan (Senior Director Africa, Forum of Federations). Additionally, four local coaches who had been trained during the Forum’s Training of Trainers program assisted the resource persons.
This workshop focused on reaching out to participants in this important state. The workshop was inaugurated by the Speaker of the Mon State Legislature, Kyin Pe, from the ruling Union and Solidarity Party. He emphasized on the need for such capacity building workshops in the present phase of Burma’s politics.
A review of the expectations of the participants showed that they were clearly focused on issues of federalism and its future in Burma. The international experts were thus able to secure yet another opportunity for a `view from below`. Participants were comfortable with the use of the word federalism and many saw it as the solution to the challenges faced by the country and the one best way to meet citizen aspirations.
The training which was attended by 40 regional party leaders, civil society representatives and democracy activists, was part of the Forum’s capacity building program "Enabling Burma’s Move Towards Democracy”, funded by the Government of Canada (Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Development).
