Women’s perceptions on power sharing in Sri Lanka

Women’s ideas on power-sharing in Sri Lanka were the focus of a recent workshop held by the Forum of Federations in co-operation with the Association of War Affected Women Sri Lanka (AWAWSL).

The workshop, which examined political participation by women in federal countries, was attended by thirty-three female politicians from all three levels of government – national, provincial and local. The women expressed their views on devolution and power-sharing at a number of panel and group discussions.

The workshop was conducted by Dr. Christina Murray (University of Cape Town, South Africa) and Dr. Rekha Saxena (Centre for Federal Studies, Hamdard University, New Delhi, India). Other speakers at the workshop included Hon. Ferial Ashraff, Minister of Housing and Construction, Hon. Amara Rathnayake (MP), Hon. Shanthini Koongahage, Hon. Sirina Kariyawasam and Hon. Upulangani Malagamuwe (members of Provincial Councils) and Hon. Ratnavadiwel (member of Trincomali Urban Council). Irina Shmakova, the Forum’s program officer for Asia-Pacific, attended the workshop on behalf of the Forum.

The event took place from August 16-18, 2007, in Habarana (North-Central Province), Sri Lanka.
