Workshop: Water Security and Federal Rivers

The Forum co-sponsored with the Australian National University and Oxford University a conference on federal rivers at St. Hugh’s College, Oxford, on April 15 and 16.

There were twenty presentations on experience in Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, South Africa, Spain, and the United States, as well as non-federal China. A particular focus was how these different countries have approached integrated river basin management and risk management. There was a keynote address by Dr. Jerome Delli Priscoli of the US Army Corps of Engineers on “Federalism, River Basin Management and the History of US Water Policy”. Forum President Emeritus George Anderson spoke on “Managing Rivers in Federations: Comparative Reflections”.

Conference participants stayed for a sister event on “Water Security, Risk and Society” on April 16 to 18.

The Federal Rivers conference will lead to a published volume in 2013.
