Berlin conference focuses on reform of the German federation

The Forum and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation hosted a conference  October 19 - 20, 2006 in Berlin with the theme â'Competition Versus Convergence, German Federalism in Need of Reform:  a Comparative Perspective.â'


The conference's four key objectives were
. to provide German politicians, practitioners and scholars with expert views from foreign experts
. to present to foreign scholars the best current research and expertise on Germany's experience with federalism; to stimulate debate on how the practices of foreign federal states could be relevant to the German context
. to promote an ongoing exchange of ideas among scholars and public officials on effective and efficient federalism.


A public meeting hosted by Bernhard Vogel, Chairman of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation featured the participation of Wolfang Schàäuble, Federal Minister of the Interior; Forum chair Arnold Koller and University of Melbourne professor Cheryl Saunders, president of the International Association of Centers for Federal Studies.
