Icon for Natural Resource Management

Natural resources are the resources present in the natural environment of a state. This category includes minerals, oil and gas, precious metals and much more.

Natural resources are critically important both for the economies and the politics of many federal and decentralizing countries. Yet, there is no standard approach across federations to the ownership and management of natural resources or the imposition and sharing of governmental revenues.ย  This variety of experiences provides the basis for valuable comparative analysis and dialogue on dealing with natural resources in a decentralized context.

How federations manage natural resources can also be necessary for the larger international community regarding a more balanced global economic development, opportunities for investment, and protection of the global environment. The study of natural resource management enhances the quality of dialogue within federations and devolved regimes around natural resource issues by helping them understand the variety of options, with their pros and cons.
