Jordan: Empowering Women in Vulnerable Communities through Climate Adaptation and Resilience

This initiative supports Jordan’s decentralization and multilevel governance reforms by strengthening the ability of local institutions and communities – especially women in rural and climate-vulnerable areas – to engage in climate-responsive decision-making. Implemented in Irbid, Mafraq, and Al-Quwayrah (Aqaba), the project enables 300 women, including youth, to participate in local climate planning and link community needs with national policy processes. The program addresses climate pressures such as water scarcity and land degradation, which disproportionately affect rural women.

What the Program Aims to Achieve:

  • Increase women’s meaningful participation in decentralized climate planning and governance structures.
  • Strengthen intergovernmental coordination on climate adaptation and climate-responsive policy development.
  • Ensure community-level priorities inform national strategies, including the National Adaptation Plan and gender–climate policies.
  • Build sustainable, locally rooted governance competencies that contribute to more inclusive and resilient multilevel governance in Jordan.
