Emerging Fiscal Institutions and Intergovernmental Fiscal Relations

Finance Commissions, Independent Fiscal Institutions (IFI’s) and Emerging Fiscal Institutions (EFI’s) around the globe play an invaluable role in strengthening sustainable and inclusive economic growth through advancing responsive, efficient and effective public expenditure. These fiscal institutions are crucial for ensuring fair, transparent, and effective fiscal relations in multilevel systems where governments today are increasingly facing rising fiscal complexity and transparency demands. They help balance national and regional interests, promote equity, and underpin the financial foundations of cooperative governance. The work of independent finance bodies directly impacts efficient economic development, national stability, social cohesion, fiscal prudence, investment and links with national targets attributed to SDGs.

This project will:

  • Build capacity through peer learning and technical assistance
  • Strengthen mechanisms for transparency and accountability
  • Promote dialogue and cooperation across jurisdictions
  • Establish an EFI’s Secretariat to support future engagement and capacity building implementation.
